Joint Winery

Joint Winery fuses the Old and New worlds. The Natural and Synthetic worlds. With a reverence towards their connection.

Joint Winery was a group project with my classmate Rod Smith in my Senior Year of college. We were given a large plot of land in St. Helena, California, and it was up to us to educate ourselves on the wine making process, program requirements, and many other nuances of the wine industry.

We went to Napa Valley to understand our site and to tour various wineries.

During our tours of various wineries, one of the most interesting pieces of information we learned was in regards to the grafting process of the grape vines. Due to a Colombian era blight most wine grape plants use American roots with European foliage. The American roots are resistant to blight and the European foliage produces a better grape.

We often pondered about the perceived miracle of wine in the first place. It’s no wonder that it holds such a steadfast place in religion, mythology, and lore. A psychoactive substance that seemingly arrived from nowhere.

This is where we derived our Parti and the concept behind our winery. It was at this juncture between humans and nature that something truly fantastic occurred. Joint Winery fuses the Old and New worlds. The Natural and Synthetic worlds. With a reverence towards their connection. The sublime.
